Ras Al Khaimah now has a new smart mobility solution for its public transportation network. The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) has introduced a Real-Time Passenger Information system (RTPI). Powered by solar energy, its operations were initially started at Al Manar Mall bus station as part of the first phase of a wider rollout across the emirate.
The project will be expanded over time to eventually cover all public transport stations in Ras Al Khaimah, allowing commuters to access real-time journey data and bus arrival times almost immediately.
How Do RTPI Systems Work?
The RTPI system uses advanced e-ink (electronic ink) technology to display real-time bus information, offering travellers a seamless experience. Travellers will be able to view actual arrival times, route details and live operational updates. Displays are high-contrast to ensure clarity in varying weather conditions, especially in sunlight, which further makes the system easier for senior citizens and People of Determination.
Having up-to-date travel information will allow residents and visitors to plan their trips better and reduce waiting times, ultimately resulting in more efficient service.

The RTPI system is also sustainble, making use of only solar power and no external electricity sources. The infrastructure is designed to operate around the clock and is supported by internal batteries for continuous operation under various conditions. The technology also requires low maintenance and has a longer operational lifespan.
Aside from the obvious consumer benefits, the Real-Time Passenger Information Systems are expected to bring cost savings of up to 81.7 per cent in total cost of ownership and operation over five years, as compared to conventional display screens.
The initiative is expected to enable smoother mobility and significantly enhance user experience when it comes to public transport in Ras Al Khaimah.
