Ras Al Khaimah is using artificial intelligence to make public transport safer for both passengers and drivers.
The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority’s Shaheen system uses an AI-powered camera positioned in front of taxi and bus drivers to monitor facial expressions and behaviour while they are on the road. The technology can detect possible signs of fatigue, distraction and stress, with data linked directly to RAKTA’s Smart Control Centre.
Beyond supporting driver wellbeing, Shaheen also helps ensure that public transport operators follow road safety regulations. The system can identify speeding, sudden or unsafe braking, reckless driving and mobile phone use behind the wheel.
The initiative forms part of Ras Al Khaimah’s wider efforts to introduce smarter technology across its transport network, creating a safer and more closely monitored experience for commuters across the emirate.
The data collected by Shaheen is analysed by RAKTA’s Smart Control Centre, allowing the authority to respond quickly when safety concerns or driving violations are detected. By identifying potential issues in real time, the system can help reduce passenger complaints while improving the overall quality and reliability of public transport services.
Shaheen was first introduced during UAE Innovation Month in 2021 under the theme ‘UAE Innovates’. While the technology was launched several years ago, it continues to play a role in RAKTA’s approach to driver monitoring and road safety.
The system is one of several AI-powered initiatives supporting Ras Al Khaimah’s move towards smarter, safer and more efficient public transport across the emirate.
