Self-driving vehicles in Ras Al Khaimah have become a significant step towards autonomous mobility in the emirate.
A few months ago, the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) launched the first pilot phase of autonomous buses (RoboBus) on Al Marjan Island. The initiative is part of the wider goal to adopt the latest smart and sustainable technologies in Ras Al Khaimah’s transport system.

The pilot phase of autonomous vehicles in Ras Al Khaimah operated through key stations, connecting hotels, resorts and major landmarks on Al Marjan Island. There are also plans to expand within the island in future phases.
RAKTA continues to conduct trials of autonomous taxis (RoboTaxi) to pinpoint the most suitable operational locations in the emirate and assess the robustness of the infrastructure for public use. Early trials displayed strong performance and safety.

Features such as advanced sensing, decision-making, and navigation were tested during trials to analyse and evaluate how these self-driving vehicles would function in varying real-life scenarios, including traffic congestion.
Both RoboBus and RoboTaxi play a major role in RAKTA’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan 2030, which focuses on integration across various transport modes and a better quality of life for residents.
Autonomous Vehicles in Ras Al Khaimah: The Benefits
If Ras Al Khaimah establishes self-driving vehicles as a smart mobility option, it will support the growing number of visitors to the emirate and RAK’s status as a popular holiday destination and tourism hotspot, especially for UAE residents.
Visitors and residents alike will be able to access multiple routes, including hotels, public spaces, and important areas, facilitating a comfortable, straightforward experience.
If Ras Al Khaimah expands its autonomous transportation network, routes would be extended, and key destinations across the emirate would be well-connected.
