Dhayah Fort
If you only visit one fort in Ras Al Khaimah, make it Dhayah Fort. The climb to the top is part of the experience. Reaching the fort requires climbing 239 steps, but once you reach the summit, it becomes immediately obvious why this location was chosen centuries ago.
The views stretch across date palm plantations, farmland, mountains, and the coastline beyond. On a clear day, it is one of the most impressive viewpoints in the emirate.
It does not feel like history trapped behind glass. Standing at the top, looking out across the landscape, it becomes much easier to understand why this hill mattered and why it was worth defending.
Falayah Fort
Dhayah Fort may get most of the attention, but Falayah Fort is the one I always recommend to people who enjoy learning the story behind a place.
The fort played a role in the events surrounding the General Maritime Treaty of 1820, making it one of the emirate’s most historically significant sites.
What makes it interesting is not necessarily the architecture. It is the knowledge that important conversations and decisions once took place here. It is easy to walk through a historic site and focus on the walls. Falayah encourages you to think about the people who once stood within them.
It may not have the dramatic setting of Dhayah, but it provides something equally valuable: context.
Al Jazeera Al Hamra Watchtower
Most people visit Al Jazeera Al Hamra for the ghost village, and rightly so. It is one of the most fascinating heritage sites in the UAE.
What many visitors miss, however, is the nearby watchtower. The ghost village tells the story of a once-thriving pearling community, while the watchtower helps explain how that community protected itself.
Together, they create a much fuller picture of life in the area before the discovery of oil transformed the region.
Al Rams Fort
Al Rams feels different from the other forts on this list. Located in one of Ras Al Khaimah’s oldest coastal communities, it offers a glimpse of a side of the emirate many visitors overlook. Spend a little time in the area, and you quickly realise how connected the community has always been to the sea.
That connection is what makes the fort worth visiting. While some forts are memorable for their size or views, Al Rams is interesting for its setting. The fort makes far more sense when viewed as part of the wider community around it rather than as a standalone attraction.
Shimal Fort and the Archaeological Area
If you enjoy discovering places that raise more questions than they answer, Shimal is well worth the drive. The fort itself is only part of the story. The surrounding area contains archaeological sites, ancient tombs, and evidence of settlements dating back thousands of years.
Set against the mountain backdrop, the landscape feels completely different from that of many coastal heritage sites elsewhere in the emirate. The more time you spend learning about Shimal, the more interesting it becomes. It is one of those places that reminds you just how much history is hidden in plain sight across Ras Al Khaimah.

Ras Al Khaimah’s forts reveal as much about the landscape as they do about the buildings themselves. Spend enough time exploring them, and you start to notice a pattern. The elevated positions, the views across the coastline, and the proximity to farmland and settlements – they were all chosen for a reason.
That is what makes these sites so rewarding to visit. They are not simply old buildings. They help explain how people lived, traded, travelled, and protected their communities long before modern Ras Al Khaimah existed.
