New national standards for children’s media in the UAE are likely to be introduced soon, as per an announcement by the National Media Authority. These plans come amid a broader initiative to strengthen digital safety and regulate the content kids can consume online.
Recently, the UAE banned all social media usage and access for kids under 15. New frameworks, rules, and identity verification methods will also be implemented to ensure that children below a certain age threshold are not exposed to unsafe aspects of digital spaces.
The announcement was made by Maitha Majid Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive Officer of the Media Strategy and Policy Sector at the National Media Authority, during a media briefing about children’s access to social media.
New Frameworks for Children’s Media in the UAE
Any new frameworks for regulating children’s media content on digital platforms in the UAE will be developed in collaboration with the Child Digital Safety Council. The main challenge lies in the quality of content kids can consume. The emphasis will be on driving content for children that instils positive values.
The National Media Authority has planned two initiatives, including a national media content standards guide for children. This guide will determine age-appropriate content for each age demographic. Media organisations, content creators, and social media platforms can use this as a reference.

The second initiative is an age classification policy and guidance framework, which covers all types of works in art and media. This includes social media and digital platforms, music, books, and films. Parents, organisations, and platforms will be able to use these frameworks to make informed decisions about the content children consume.
The authority also monitors media content aimed at children to ensure compliance with national standards and rules.
Interestingly, children’s input will also be taken into account in these new content standards. Kids can share their perspectives, as appropriate, on the types of content they feel might be beneficial and interesting to them.
These media content initiatives are part of the UAE’s broader national campaign to construct a safe, harmonious, and productive digital environment for future generations.
