UAE Bans Social Media for Kids Under 15: What You Need to Know

The UAE has introduced a new law setting the minimum age for social media use at 15, meaning children under 15 will no longer be permitted to have social media accounts.

Under the new regulations, social media platforms will be required to actively identify underage users and promptly suspend or remove accounts that do not meet the age requirement. Teenagers aged 15 and 16 will still be able to access social media, but under a regulated framework that includes enhanced safety features, privacy protections and age-appropriate safeguards.

Currently, most social media platforms rely on users self-reporting their age during the sign-up process. However, with the introduction of the new UAE regulations, this approach is no longer considered sufficient, particularly given how easily younger users can bypass age restrictions by entering incorrect information.

To strengthen enforcement, platforms will be required to implement age-verification systems that can confirm a user’s age and digital identity. These systems may include AI-powered verification technologies, biometric checks and other approved methods overseen by the Child Digital Safety Council.

The move forms part of the UAE’s wider efforts to create a safer digital environment for young people, while encouraging more responsible use of social media among teenagers.

The new legislation is part of the UAE’s wider efforts to create a safer online environment for young people. Alongside age restrictions, the framework includes strict privacy protections, with age-verification systems required to minimise data collection and prevent the use of children’s information for targeted advertising or behavioural profiling.

The rules apply to all children under 15, regardless of parental consent. Parents of 15 and 16-year-olds will also have greater oversight of account settings and safety features.

The move comes amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on young people. A 2024 survey found that children in the UAE spend an average of three hours per day on digital platforms. Supporters of the law believe the changes will help reduce risks associated with excessive social media use while encouraging healthier online habits.
