Ras Al Khaimah’s $1 billion green port project by RAK Ports may become one of the region’s most significant sustainable projects. With land reclamation being largely complete, the Saqr Port 2.0 uses recycled waste materials from quarries in Ras Al Khaimah.
Saqr Port is 18 metres deep and can accommodate large vessels, including the world’s largest cargo ships. This reportedly has the deepest draft in the region, compared with the maximum draft of 15 metres at other UAE ports.
Together, these aspects will improve cargo efficiency and enhance Ras Al Khaimah’s maritime trade.

An Ambitious Development
Ras Al Khaimah’s Saqr Port 2.0 has been planned in three phases. The first phase will commence operations in 2027 and extend until late 2028 amid ongoing regional disruptions, as the first basin opens. Meanwhile, the second phase is scheduled to reach completion by 2030 to 2031. The third phase of the project is expected to be more flexible and continue through 2030.
As a whole, Saqr 2.0 will offer a variety of new services, adding to those offered by nearby ports in Fujairah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
One of the port’s areas of focus is shifting towards environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly industries and practices, including green ship recycling. This could also boost entry into European markets.
