A Guide to Suwaidi Pearl Farm in Ras Al Khaimah

Pearl farming in the UAE, particularly in Ras Al Khaimah, has a long and rich history that is central to the emirate’s heritage and historical significance.

The Suwaidi Pearl Farm in Ras Al Khaimah is the main and most active pearl farm. This pearl farm should definitely be on your list if you’re looking to take a pearl farm tour in Ras Al Khaimah, which is a highly popular Emirati heritage activity for tourists. Suwaidi is located in Al Rams, the city’s northernmost neighbourhood.

The History of Pearl Fishing in the UAE

Pearl fishing in the UAE, mainly in Ras Al Khaimah, dates back over seven millennia. Archaeologists have discovered that Ras Al Khaimah had a flourishing pearl industry as far back as the 12th century. The city soon grew into a busy and important trading hub in the region.

The most traditional method of pearl fishing involved large communities of men diving to retrieve exotic pearls, often using turtle shell nose clips and wax earplugs. Responsibilities were delegated among groups, including boat safety, group harmony and efficiency.

Pearl Farm Tours at Suwaidi Pearl Farm

Suwaidi is one of the few places in Ras Al Khaimah that continues to honour the pearl fishing tradition, keeping it alive for generations to learn from. Tourists can take traditional pearl boat tours at Suwaidi Pearls and learn more about the emirate’s history with pearls and the sea, while gaining insights into intriguing folklore and legends surrounding these gemstones.

Tours typically start at Al Rams Corniche. A traditional pearling boat will provide a serene exploration of the surrounding mangroves and coastal wetlands, offering plenty of fresh air and scenic views.

Meanwhile, a tour guide will explain the significance of the shallow bay and the protective mangroves. You’ll also learn more about traditional pearl diving techniques and will get a glimpse into the traditional trader’s box, called ‘Bish-Takh-Tah’. It houses exquisite Arabian pearls and tools used in pearl trading.

Next, visitors will be dropped off at the Suwaidi Pearl farmhouse, situated on a floating pontoon, while gaining insights into innovative scientific methods used in contemporary pearl farming. Suwaidi Pearl Farm has a simple, eco-friendly system powered by solar panels.

Guests can also try their hand at oyster-opening. Oysters may contain pearls, which you can take home as a souvenir. Lastly, you can shop at the gift store and browse the curated collection of delicate pearls.

While the farm is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm, tours are held according to a fixed schedule. Individual tours typically take place at 10 am, 12.30 pm, and 3 pm, while family tours with lunch are held at 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm. Private boat tours are held at 1 pm. The traditional tour usually takes two and a half hours.

Inquiries can be made by calling +971 72211124 or sending a WhatsApp message to +971 507736086. You can also email the farm at booking@suwaidipearls.ae.

It’s important to note that the traditional pearl boat tour may not include an Emirati lunch, as it depends on the tour package booked. If you’re interested in pearl and scuba diving, you can arrange them by contacting Suwaidi Pearls in advance to confirm available slots. You may need to bring your own diving equipment as well.

Lastly, as you will be visiting a local village, it’s best to wear loose, comfortable and modest clothing that covers the shoulders, chest and knees. Avoid open-toe footwear and opt for laced shoes, such as sneakers. Also, carry sunscreen, shades and plenty of water.
