Emperor Fish Released into Waters of Al Qawasim Corniche

World Environment Day 2026 was celebrated on Friday, 5th June. Observing the importance of this day, a new sustainability initiative was started in Ras Al Khaimah. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saud Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ras Al Khaimah Public Services Department, attended an event for the release of emperor fingerlings into the waters of Al Qawasim Corniche.

This initiative was organised by the Ras Al Khaimah Environment Protection and Development Authority in collaboration with Gulf Aquaculture for World Environment Day 2026.

As per HH Sheikh Ahmed, the project marks Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to protecting its fish resources and improving marine stocks, with the ultimate goal of preserving the environment, safeguarding natural resources, and ensuring their sustainability for future generations.

What Are Emperor Fingerlings?

Emperor fingerlings are juvenile or very small-sized Emperor Fish and are considered prized marine food fish in the Indo-Pacific region. With streamlined, deep bodies and big eyes, these young hatchery-raised fish are often used in marine restocking and environmental conservation programs.

Releasing them into protected coastal zones and marine reserves boosts depleted wild populations and helps balance seabed ecosystems, which is crucial for an emirate like Ras Al Khaimah, with plenty of natural areas and water bodies.

Importance of Marine Ecosystems in RAK

Protecting aquatic ecosystems in Ras Al Khaimah is essential to preserving the emirate’s rich marine biodiversity, especially since these ecosystems support crucial local industries such as fisheries and ecotourism.

Rs Al Khaimah’s coastal lagoons, mudflats, and extensive mangrove forests are critical breeding grounds and natural habitats for endangered marine life, such as sea turtles and migratory birds, among many others.
